"Asian men are generally not gentlemen."

This is something that i have come across this few days. it has always been happening around us everyday, just that we din get a chance to slow down and think it through.

Let me illustrate my point.

I was waiting at the bus stop yesterday at Bukit Panjang for bus service 184. When it finally arrives, there were many people queueing to board the bus. I was waiting patiently for my turn and suddenly, this guy (beside me) just cut in and went to board the bus before i got a chance to. I think he's in his early twenties (obviously, with a very ugly face). Don't you think he's ungentlemanly? Couldn't he just wait for his turn patiently? He's not the only one. Many times, you may have seen uncles squeezing ahead to get on the bus first. Some of them think that they are old, therefore they have the right to board the bus first.

Well, if they are blind or handicapped, obviously i would let them go first. But some of them are even fitter than i am!! We all have equal rights to board the bus, i dun think you have any special right to board the bus before i do just because you are older than i am. Singaporean men are really ungentlemanly! it's just the kiasu spirit that lies within all of us.

If you noticed, my title says " Asian men" and not "Singaporean men". I have just been to Taipei in May and i dun think that the men are any more gentlemanly than Singaporean men. Similarly, they just squeeze their way through. I am a supporter of the motion "Men and women should enjoy equal status in today's society." But that doesn't mean that men do not have to be ungentlemanly. the same goes when the young should give way to the pregnant or handicapped.

On the other hand, i have seen some caucasians who are more gentlemanly. They always open the door for the ladies, give up their seats for others and allow people to go ahead of them when boarding the bus.

There are always exceptions. i am sure that there are asian men who open the door for the ladies and caucasian men who are more kiasu than us. But generally, asian men really ought to learn from the caucasians.
